TV Advert Analysis – Louise Jephcott
Huge Boss Just Different advert:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiRG7SjZeBw
The advert shows one man in particular walking about in New York’s streets, in various clubs and different kind of buildings. At some times, he is with a group of people, but he is always at the front. Other times, he is on his own. Everything around him changes and his voice is heard.
The advert holds a realist narrative, although it comes across as surreal and dramatic. The shots are very basic, using mostly straight-angled shots of a person’s face or a nightclub. The editing is huge in this advert, to make it look surreal. For example, the camera is pointing down, revealing a square staircase that spirls. The editing that is used makes it look as long the staircase is being extended. Green screen is used throughout the advert to create changing backgrounds. In some shots, the people are walking across a zebra crossing, and then the people emerge from the lines, as if walking inbetween pillars. It looks as if this advert didn’t use a lot of money to budget the advert, but a lot of work went into editing.
The advert was trying to tell the audience that anything can inspire you, whether it’s a fragrance, a place or an experience. That message is fairly obvious. The message is designed to make people be inspired by what’s around you, to not be scared of what could be and just delve into the unknown and get inspired. The advert uses a celebrity. His name is Jared Leto. I think Hugo Boss chose him because of his status. Also, because of the advert’s message, they used him. Many people know that Jared loves to get inspired, and he is a role model for many. Jared believes in following your dreams and ‘launching forth into the deep’.
I think the advert is aimed at mostly teenagers and adults. Because mostly teenagers and adults use fragrances. Also, because it’s an advert for a fragrance, I also think this advert is aimed at the female audience. He advert literally talks about being inspired, no matter who you are.
This advert has benefits because it’s not like other perfume/fragrance adverts. Most perfume/fragrance adverts show seduction on a high level, but this one only uses realistic themes. At the end, Jared tilts the bottle upside down, with the logo clear on the bottle.
I believe the advert is successful because of the message it gives out and the differences it has to other adverts, like how it moves away from seduction and moves closer to life itself, and how they used Jared Leto.
We Buy Any Car advert:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXiJBp7HK5o
The advert starts off with a man sat at a desk like you would do for the News. Then, suddenly, he breaks into dance along with a few other back-dancers. At certain times, a random person would walk across the stage with a large piece of card with writing on – lyrics, if you will. It ends with the man sat at the desk again.
The advert seems realistic, but it’s dramatic. The camera shots are, again, basic in where they are. Most of them are low-angled shots, making the people seem taller. Other shots are close-ups. The editing is fast, because of the music and dancing, like a music video. The music itself is catchy and sticks in your head afterwards, making it memorable. I think the background was green screen because they put up various different pictures of cars. It seems like a cheap budget advert, because everything is so basic.
The message is very obvious – they buy any car. They want to buy your car and they give you money back. No celebrity is used in this advert. Probably because the advert wants normal, average people to sell their car, and feel like a part of society.
The advert is aimed at adults who are wanting to get rid of their car and get a new one. Both male and female. Other adverts are similar to We Buy Any Car, like GoCompare.com. I think this offers competition in a good way. The advert is strictly for selling and buying cars. That is its USP.
The brand identity is constantly said throughout the advert, and the logo is shown right at the end behind the man.
This advert was successful because of its catchy tune and memorable name.
